Cycling–the New Golf for Rainmaking Attorneys

I originally published this post early this morning under the title “Juris Cycling Team Racks Up Another Win”. After feedback from a number of cyclists, I decided to re-title and repost with changes that emphasize the importance of cycling as a rainmaking activity.
Cycling is the new sport replacing golf and tennis for Generation X and Y executives and professionals. Rainmaking is a product of relationship building, and nothing beats this training-intensive, competitive activity for doing just that. If you are a cyclist, you are in an exclusive club heavily weighted toward the very people who direct business to law firms. Managing partners should be aware of this shift and not overlook the value of cycling. Golf outings are still the mainstay of baby boomers, but a firm should also put its support behind attorney cyclists and team sponsorship.
The above photograph captures the Juris/Bank of America Cycling Team driving the pace in Men's Category 3 Stage 2 Criterium during the Edgar Soto Memorial Stage Races (www.sotomemorial.org) held May 26-29, 2006.
Juris team members on the front, from left to right, are Marshall Martin, Chief Operating Officer of Juris, Inc; Geoffrey Vickers (behind the yellow jersey), attorney with Baker Donelson; Matt Winstead (in yellow); and Stephen Collins, President & CEO of Juris, Inc. Matt Winstead went on to win Stage 2 and the entire stage race.
Attorneys like Geoffrey Vickers make up a sizable portion of cyclists. What does recreational and competitive cycling have to do with more partner income? If you have to ask, you haven’t priced these modern marvels lately and as noted above it another relationship building activity for attorney rainmaking.
