DuPont's Litigation Chief Speaks 0ut on Law Firm Mergers–Bigger Isn't Better

Writing in the March 2007 American Lawyer, Thomas Sager quotes one of his general counsel friends: “I’ve never seen a law firm merger justified on the basis of reducing cost to the client.”

 

According to Sager, more often than not, DuPont’s costs go up following a merger.  He notes that surveys consistently show that larger spend more on overhead on a per-lawyer basis than small firms.  Higher costs aren’t the only negative Sager has experienced.  He notes, “We have discovered that the larger the law firm becomes, the harder it is for the firm to serve us as well as it has in the past."

 

Post-merger negative impacts have caused DuPont’s law department to part ways with a few of their primary .
