Law Firm Plan Is To Change the Plan

11:29 am

Regardless of what you call it (planning, budgeting, or reflection), law firm leaders start thinking about the coming new year during this time of the year. Whatever changes or ‘stay the course’ plans they come up with are based on assumptions about the future.

Assumptions are inaccurate predictions about the future. As any general knows, plans start to fall apart as the battle begins. As circumstances change, assumptions have to be updated—changed. Plans have to be revised.

The majority of midrange firms do not engage in formal planning. Many law firm leaders appear to feel that a plan takes away their flexibility. It does not if one understands the notion of “temporary targets”. It does not if everyone understands that the plan is to change the plan.

Planning is an organized way to practice, communicate and align the team. For more on planning see the prior post The Structure to Structured Planning.
